Nevada insurance law changes
July 14, 2011
The state of Nevada requires registered owners of a vehicle to maintain continuous insurance liability coverage. Previously, vehicles with a lapse of insurance coverage were subject to the suspension of the registration and a reinstatement fee of $250.
Effective July 1, 2011, Nevada has replaced the flat fee with a tiered system of fees and fines based on the number of offenses and the length of the lapse. Please note:
- Although the reinstatement fee starts at $250 for the first offense, additional fines may be levied if the lapse of coverage is longer than 30 days
- The maximum combination of fees and fines can exceed $1,750 for third offense and more than 181 days’ lapse, and other penalties may apply
- Any lapse of insurance coverage can put drivers at risk of driving illegally
Please refer to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles News Release for complete details.
Also, please note that the state of Nevada requires insurance carriers to electronically report insurance directly to the DMV. PHH advises you to confirm that your insurance carrier is submitting your vehicles’ information electronically to avoid lapse of insurance or unnecessary fines and penalties.
