California registrations have resumed

The California Department of Motor Vehicles has resumed issuing renewal notices for registration fees due on or after July 1, 2011.

Fees have changed for registration renewals with expiration dates of July 1, 2011 and later, and for original applications with fees due on or after July 1, 2011. Fee changes include:

  • Registration fees were increased from $36 to $46
  • Vehicle License Fee (VLF) rate was lowered from 1.15% to 0.65%
  • State Sales/Use tax rates were lowered by 1%

The state of California is allowing a grace period of 30 days from the time the renewal applications are sent out. Penalties for payments received after the 30-day grace period will be assessed at 60%.
