GM recalls crossover SUVs; seat belts may not latch

General Motors Co announced today that it plans to recall more than 243,000 model year 2009/2010 crossover sport utilities, mainly in the United States, to inspect safety belts for possible damage. There is concern about potential damage to the second-row seat belts that can cause the belt to feel properly latched when it isn't.

The voluntary recall covers the 2009 and 2010 Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook.

The automaker and regulators said most of the vehicles were shipped within the United States. Several thousands others were exported to Canada, Mexico, China, Saudi Arabia and other countries.

GM said the plastic shield around the seat belt release button could get caught on some trim and not return to its normal position after the seats are folded flat. If enough force is applied when the seats are pushed back to their normal position, the shield around the release button could be pushed onto the button and make it malfunction.

There are no known cases of belts failing in a crash, GM said.

If your fleet has vehicles that are affected by this recall, GM will notify your drivers directly.
