Toyota announces voluntary safety recall

Recommended by 1 Person Thumbs Up

Toyota Motor Corp. has announced a voluntary safety recall of more than 420,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the U.S. due to problems with the crankshaft pulley on the V-6 engine. In some vehicles, the  adhesive attaching this pulley to the engine may be insufficient and could cause the outer ring of the crankshaft pulley to become misaligned with the inner ring, causing noise and/or illumination of the discharge warning light. If the condition is not corrected, the belt for the power steering pump could become detached from the pulley, causing the driver to experience a sudden increase in steering effort due to a loss of power steering assistance.

The following models are included in this recall:

  • 2004 Avalon
  • 2004 and 2005 Camry, Highlander, Sienna and Solara
  • 2006 Highlander HV
  • 2004 and 2005 Lexus ES330 and RX330
  • 2006 Lexus RX400h

So far no problems or accidents relating to this recall have been reported. You can read the FAQ page from Toyota for more information.

Toyota plans to send out recall notices beginning in January 2012. If you have impacted vehicles, PHH will mail the notices directly to your drivers. In the meantime, if you or your drivers have any immediate concerns, please take your vehicle to the closest Toyota dealer for inspection.
