Vermont added to the growing list of states banning texting while driving

Rather than worry about drivers in specific states, we strongly advise, if you haven’t done so already, an immediate update to your fleet policy manual that prohibits the use of texting and instant messaging while operating a vehicle. Additionally, you should also require drivers who use cell phones, BlackBerry®s, Apple® iPhones, etc. as part of their daily business to go “hands-free” as a minimum, and then go further to completely ban the use of cell phones while driving. Once the policy is in place, you should then communicate the change to drivers and their managers, and receive positive indication that the new policy was communicated. Given the current environment, the risk of not having such a policy is too great.

Visit the Governor’s Highway Safety Association’s website to see an updated list of all US cell phone and texting laws. It’s a great link to share with your drivers, especially if they travel between states.
